South Africa’s manganese mines must not be denied competitive logistics

Engineering News & Mining Weekly is repeatedly hearing that the countries that will shape the next phase of the global manganese ore market are making infrastructure decisions now and South Africa needs to be among them. The industry has studied how costs can be lowered and the State must lend its ear to what is being proposed.

The private sector is extracting the ore competitively but the State is letting South Africa down by not providing a competitive logistics platform. It is simply out of the question that bulk commodities are forced to resort to road transportation. The State’s constraints risk the value of our manganese endowment being lost.
